Every culture has a mid-winter light festival tradition to cheer us during the long hours of darkness. In my culture, we light the candles during Hanukkah to commemorate our ancient history. We start with one candle on the first day of Hanukkah, increase the number of candles every day, and have a complete set of lights on the eighth day of Hanukkah. The light increases, just like a growing crystal!
